My Short Stint In The Restaurant Business

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I have a friend that owns a couple BBQ restaurants in the area and since I have been layed off twice in the last 8 months I spoke with him about setting up a tent in our front yard.  I live on Main Street and there are commercial building around me with a stop light on the corner.  He thought it was a great idea and went to speak to the city about it.

He spoke with the guy that gives out the business license who told him that he didn’t think it would be a problem, and he would check with the city attorney to be sure.  If there was a problem he was going to call and let us know.

I followed up with Charlie several times over the next week to find out if he had heard from the city.  He had not so we set up.  It was the perfect day to do so.  The County Fair was just starting and our home is on the way to the fair so we get a lot of drive by traffic.

We started later than I had hoped and didn’t get the food there until after 3:00pm.  Business was really slow.  We sold one sandwich.

Just after 5pm a police officer came by and asked us for our city business license.  I repeated the information Charlie told me to say which was the guy he spoke with said it wouldn’t be a problem. Officer Friendly said that wasn’t true and there was no way the city would say that.

I promptly called Charlie up and told him what was going on.  Charlie gave the name of the guy he spoke with  and the officer went back to his car to call him.  About five minutes later he emerged from his car and told us Charlie had lied.  The city guy claims he told Charlie it wouldn’t be worth the hassle and it would cost too much to do it and not to do it.

That was a first.  I had Charlie on the phone so he could here what was being said.  Officer Friendly proceed to tell my wife and I that we had broken the law.  We repeatedly told him that Charlie told us [name removed to protect the corrupt] said it wouldn’t be a problem.

He then went on a rant about how dishonest Charlie is and how he is a liar.  The cop then told us he can and will give us a ticket for failure to obtain a business license because we broke the law.  We repeatedly told him that as far as we knew we had received permission from the city.

He had another officer come over to right up the ticket.  I asked our new friend how much it would be and he said he has no idea. It could be $25 or $2,500, at which point my wife teared up.

Our friend’s demeanor changed when he made my wife cry.  He wasn’t going to give a warning instead, but he suddenly started to defend us.  He told us how we will see what kind of person Charlie is when I have to go to court to see what the judge will do.  He said that since we thought we were doing everything right, he wouldn’t be hard on us but if Charlie was before him he would through the book at him.

Charlie is a good person and wouldn’t lie like that especially since we wanted to open a permanent restaurant in the city.   The next morning he went to the city building to talk with [the lying politician] who was out of town.  He spoke with the other city employee with her stereotypical government employee attitude, but had some luck when he recognized a guy that was there when he spoke the the main guy.

He explained to the lady that [soon to be unemployed] said he didn’t see a problem with it and would call if there was a problem. Charlie then turned to the other guy that was there and said something like, “You were there, that is what he said wasn’t it?” to which the guy replied, “Ya, something like that.”

The lady then explained in an abrupt manner that you cannot run business, even temporary, from a residence.  It either has to be residential or commercial.  You can’t sleep where you do business.

Amazing that the main guy didn’t think of that in the first place.

Charlie then went to the court to see about getting the ticket deleted.  He spoke with the secretary to the Prosecutor and after listening to Charlie’s story she said that she would call him back and let him if I even had to appear in court.

I sure hope I don’t have to go.  I know Charlie will take care of the fine if there is one, but there never should have been a ticket.

The moral of the story is, carry a voice recorder with you whenever you speak with a politician, government worker, or police officer.  If it is your word against theirs, the government is always right.

How I Got The Top Spot In Google

I have seen ads all over the place talking about how they can get you a top position on google within8 hours or 4 hours or 2 hours or even 1 hour.  Some chart $199 up to $2000 for this great service.

I did it in 30 minutes.

It didn’t cost me anything.

Unfortunately, I didn’t think to record it so I could have proof that I did it so I did it again with another website.

This time it took about 2 hours

In the video I said the results were a little less when in fact the results increased from about 13,700 to about 32,700.

I didn’t point it out in the video, but I had the top spot and then a secondary position right under it which makes it even better.

The way to get to the top of Google is to pick keywords with very little competition.  They may not be searched much, if ever, but you get to the top and the marketer delivered as promised.  If the keyword phrase can  return around 10,000 website, then you have a very good chance of being number 1.

I am sure there are going to be a lot of angry Internet marketers out there once this video gets out, but it really is simple to do.  There are a lot of other genuine marketing techniques out there that do require experience, knowledge, and time that they can sell.

Good luck!

Internet Marketing “Gurus” – This is weird

I am on several email lists of Internet marketing gurus.  I opted in to these lists for a few reasons.  The main reason is to analyze the email.  I am looking for what I like about the content of the email, the frequency of emails from the particular person, the value created vs trying to sell me something ratio,  etc.

The majority of emails I receive from the gurus are solely trying to peddle another guru’s product.  I understand that they are trying to make money from the list, but I haven’t seen a disclaimer yet that reads:

“By submitting your email address you allow me to send 3 to 5 emails a day in an effort to get you to buy stuff through my affiliate links.  You also agree that you do not want to receive anything of substance from me to your email address other than more of my friends products.”

One of the emails I receive does a fairly good job of disguising the purpose of the email.  He tries to get the reader to feel frustrated with something then has a link to his blog which forwards to “the answer”, an affiliate product.

There is another marketer that does offer tips and creates value some of the time so I am okay when he sends the emails selling the next great product.

A few of the gurus do offer some sort of value on their website in addition to the product offers.  I have purchased some of their products and they have been great.  I don’t expect to get everything for free, however a newsletter, in my opinion, seems like it should help in some way.

One more annoying thing about the emails is that I can always tell when the next big product launch is coming up because I get the same emails from about everyone of the Internet marketing gurus.  Some of them do write their own emails, but many of them are canned emails.

Another strategy is webinars.  You can get a lot of people to opt in to your mailing list if you offer a free webinar.  I have logged in to some of these webinars and I must say that most of them are informative and helpful.  Those kind of marketers I purchase from.  Then there are those that don’t offer any value.

I was on a webinar this past Monday that advertised they would be teaching how to build a list real quick so you can just push send and make thousands of dollars.  I knew going into it that it was going to be a little harder than that.  The webinar was 2 hours long and their only tip was to email your list everyday and rotate 15-20 emails because people don’t remember what you sent them so they won’t notice.  The rest of the 1 hour and 55 minutes consisted of them telling about themselves (I am okay with that, they were telling the story of how they started with nothing and are now millionaires. If they can do it so can you.), talking about their success, and talking about their product.

Now that I think about it, they did deliver as promised.  They claim to have had over 2000 people on the webinar (which was just a conference call).  To build a list, host a free webinar and have affiliates email their list.

Tip to future Internet marketing gurus: If you want people to buy stuff through you create value first then send out “buy me now” emails second.

P.P.S  This is so I will have a link back to my site for Jordan English from the sites that publish my posts on their sites.

Ready to launch tomorrow

I have been working on building a website that will offer a limited-term membership program to teach people… something.  I will finally have it ready to go tomorrow.  I just need to film 3 short videos and then add the autoresponder and paypal to it.  Everything else is ready to go right now.

For the pen name idea, I deceided to use one.  I was doing a lot of research on the subject and the name can help with marketing.  I spoke with an attorney about it as well, and he said there aren’t any laws about it.  I won’t reveal the name here, but the background and the story of this character will all be mine.  Everything I say as with the pen name will be true.

It has become more important now for this to work otherwise I may have to go get a “job”.

Product Creation and Pen Names

Since I intend on writing ebooks and building sites in different categories I was considering using pen names instead of my real name.  My reasoning for that is it may detract from my credibility if I appear as an expert in three or four non-related fields.  The first ebook that I wrote and gave away for free had my real name, Jordan English, and if somebody was interested in learning more about me all they have to do is search my name in Google.  They would then find out about my challenge and may feel the information suddenly lost value.

I don’t want you to think that my purpose is to be sneaky and hide.  I will use my own personal experiences and will not make stuff up for the pen name character, it will all be me.  If I write about how to skin a rabbit and then write another ebook about a Vegan diet, all under the same name, I may not be taken seriously.  I am not going to write about either of those because I have never skinned an animal and I am not a Vegan.

The major downside to it is if I have requests of interviews or presentations.  I don’t know what I would do in that case.  Would I tell them my real name or go on as the pen name?  I wonder what the ramifications of each would be.  I would probably reveal my real name if that was the case.

I work from home and it is about to get a whole lot busier so I will take me some time to get more ebooks written.  I will continue to update this blog when something happens.
